Proclamation of the Word
The proclamation of the Word of God is truly a ministry in the Church. Lectors bring the living Word of God to the liturgical assembly. In and through them God speaks to the gathered faithful. The ministry of the Word, therefore, is treated seriously and with great dignity.

The Word of God is not merely read during the liturgy. It is proclaimed. Effective proclamation involves the delivery of the message with clarity, conviction and appropriate pace. Proclamation is a special ministry which presupposes faith and also rouses faith in those who hear the Word proclaimed. Ideally, members of the assembly listen to the proclamation of the Scriptures and do not read along in missalettes. In the act of communal listening, the worshippers experience not only unity among themselves but also the presence of Christ speaking to them through the Word Listening is not an isolated moment. It is a way of life. It means openness to the Lord’s voice not only in the Scriptures but in the events of our daily lives and in the experience of our brothers and sisters. It is not just my listening but our listening together for the Lord’s word to the community (Fulfilled in Your Hearing: The Homily in the Sunday Assembly #20 National Conference of Catholic Bishops).

All liturgical ministers, especially the ministers of the Word, must be properly trained for their ministry. The ministry of the Word requires skill in public reading, knowledge of the principles of liturgy, and an understanding and love of the scriptures.

Lector training courses are offered through Tepeyac Institute, a diocesan school of formation for ministries. You may call: 915-872-8420 or e-mail Tepeyac@elpasodiocese.org for more information on the course.

If you feel called to the Ministry of Lectors at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, please contact: Yolanda Quesada 915-859-7824.

The Ysleta Mission Festival Committee fosters the sense of community at Ysleta Mission. Working together as a family, we generate funds in order to

1) make capital improvements to the Ysleta Mission,
2) the historic Jesuit Hall and surrounding buildings for Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish,
3) as well as supporting some parish programming.

We pursue that mission by holding an annual bazaar known as the Ysleta Mission Festival as a celebration for the community of Ysleta. The Festival is held the second weekend in July, close to the feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, July 16th. In 2005, our popular festival invested in bringing a major musical act.

The current Committee was formed in 2001 to revive fading interest in the annual OLMC bazaar celebration and to provide a venue targeting a broad segment of the community.

Our average annual attendance for the 3 day celebration is close to 20,000. There is no entrance fee but donations are always accepted at the gate. Donations help defray the cost of a regional major entertainment act.

Carmelitas gather together in groups so that we can support one another in our desire to live up to what God wants of us.

We share prayer times, meals, concerns, and, sometimes, work.
We are sisters and brothers to one another and call each other to accountability for our way of life.

You may not think of your family as a community, but Carmelitas often think of our community as a family.

A family means home, loyalty, love, belonging, support, and friendship. For Carmelitas that’s what our community is. Like a family, our community helps us grow and achieve our goals, takes care of us when we’re sick, gives us a push when we’re stuck, and expects us to make a contribution to the overall well-being of the group.

We gather together the first Sunday of every month to celebrate the Eucharist. After the Mass, Carmelitas attend a monthly community meeting. We wear the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel daily as an external sign of dedication to Mary, as a sign of trust in her motherly protection, as well as an expression of their desire to be like Mary in her commitment of Christ and to others.

____________________________________________________________________________________________
