Our participation in Catholic Relief Service’s Operation Rice Bowl unites us in prayer, fasting, and giving with the millions of people throughout the world who are oppressed by poverty, injustice, war, disease and lack of education and other opportunities.

Retiro de Operacion “Plato de Arroz”

Sábado, 13 de Marzo, 2010 a las 9:00 am en el Salón de la Iglesia. Todos quedan invitados a compartir a un día de reflexión, ayuno, recuerda la Cuaresma es un tiempo de volvernos hacia Dios.

“ La zarza ardiente y el Llamado a Moisés” — Hoy escuchamos el Llamado de Moisés a sacar a su pueblo de la opresión y llevarlo a la Libertad. Dios promete estar con ellos en su paso a una vida nueva. Nuestra participación en la Operación Plato de Arroz de Católica Relief Services Nos une en oración, ayuno y donativos con los millones de personas del mundo entero que están oprimidas a causa de la pobreza, injusticia, Guerra, enfermedad, falta de escuelas y otras oportunidades.

Look back and thank God.

Look forward and trust God.

How’s your Forty Days going? Remember my homily two weeks ago and then again on Ash Wednesday? The significance of entering into the Forty Days of penance is to enter Forty Days of seeking reform of life and relationships. We’re 18 days into the pilgrimage. How’s it going for you?

The poem above can be divided into four “signposts” for the pilgrimage.

I. Look back and thank God.
Last week we looked “back,” to see the road that has brought us where we are. But, if we only look back, we’ll never move forward.
II. Look within and find God!
A second signpost on this Lenten pilgrimage is to look within to discover where God has been present and is present in our walk. Just as the tears of looking back can be of sorrow as well as of joy, we need to recognize God is present in both the obvious emotional moments as in the “absences” when we’re learning to walk alone. Whose wisdom and light is it that guides us to make the hard decisions deep within us? It is there, at the core of the onion which is our life that we can find the face of God.

Elijah (AKA Elias) went walking 40 days in the desert after an attempt to die because the world was against him. (1 Kings 19) God wasn’t finished with Elijah and called him out. God’s voice, “Elijah, what are you doing here?” Elijah responded to God’s question with his own problem. God then said “Go out and stand before me on the mountain.” An earthquake shook him to his core! A hurricane blew! A fire consumed the mountain! And the still breeze that came after defined Elijah’s new mission. Go to your mountain top and your cave to see and listen and hear!

What have been your earthquakes, your consuming passions and hurricanes? How have you confronted such in your life? Look within and find God.

Lent is the time to sit in the backyard, or on Franklin Mountain and to be quiet. You know the storms and struggles. Now is the time to be still. When our heart is allowed to go quiet, we can hear God.

So there’s your seven day deepening for this week! One memory or story a day of the passions and storms sitting quiet after each: “N., What are you doing here?”

¿Dónde Encuentra Uno a Dios? II

Mira hacia atrás y da gracias a Dios.
¡Mira dentro de ti y encuentra a Dios!
Mira hacia adelante y ten fe en Dios.
Mira alrededor de ti y sirve a Dios.

¿Cómo van sus Cuarenta Días? ¿Recuerdan mi homilía de hace tres semanas y otra vez el Miércoles de Ceniza? El significado de entrar en los Cuarenta Días de penitencia es de entrar en cuarenta días de buscar la reformación de nuestra vida y relaciones. Ya llevamos 18 días en nuestra peregrinación. ¿Cómo les va?

El poema citado arriba puede ser dividido en cuatro “postes indicadores” para la peregrinación.
I. Mira hacia atrás y da gracias a DiosLa semana pasada miramos “hacia atrás” para ver el camino que nos ha traído a donde estamos. Pero, si sólo vemos hacia atrás, nunca nos moveremos hacia adelante.
II. ¡Mira hacia adentro y encuentra a Dios!
Un segundo poste indicador de esta peregrinación Cuaresmal es de ver dentro de uno para descubrir dónde ha esta Dios presente y está presente en nuestro caminar. Igual como las lagrimas de ver hacia atrás pueden ser de tristeza o de alegría, necesitamos reconocer que Dios está presente en los momentos emocionales obvios como en las “ausencias” cuando aprendemos a caminar solos. ¿De quién es la sabiduría y luz que nos guía para hacer las decisiones difíciles que llevamos profundamente dentro de nosotros? Es allí al “corazón de a cebolla” que es nuestra vida que podemos encontrar el rostro de Dios.

Elías (También conocido como Elijah) se fue caminando cuarenta días en el desierto después de un intento de morir porque el mundo estaba contra él.

(1 Reyes 19) Dios no había terminado con Elías y le llamó que saliera. La voz de Dios, “Elías, ¿que haces aquí?” Elías respondió a la pregunta de Dios con su propio problema. Luego le dijo Dios, “Sal fuera y quédate de pie ante mi, sobre la montaña.” ¡Un terremoto la sacudió fuertemente! ¡Sopló un huracán! ¡La montaña fue consumida por fuego! Y el viento suave y delicado que siguió caracterizó su nueva misión. ¡Ve a la cima de tu montaña y a tu cueva para ver, escuchar y oír!

¿Cuáles han sido tus terremotos, tu pasiones consumidoras y huracanes? ¿Cómo has enfrentado estas en tu vida? Mira dentro de ti y encuentra a Dios.

La Cuaresma es el tiempo para sentarte en tu jardín o en la Montaña Franklin y estar quieto. Conoces las tormentas y las luchas. Ahora es la hora de estar quieto. Cuando permitimos que nuestro corazón esté quieto, podemos oír a Dios.

¡De modo que allí está tu profundizar de 7 días para esta semana! Un recuerdo o historia por día de las pasiones y tormentas, manteniéndonos quietos después de cada uno: “Nombre, ¿Qué haces aquí?”

Lent is not about external observance. The observance of Lent challenges us to enter God’s transformative call in our hearts and lives.

But how do we get there? …or at least get started? The poem above can be divided into four “signposts” for the pilgrimage.

I. Look back and thank God.

Looking back is what Bible Study is about. Looking back is what reading the Sunday and daily scriptures is about. Looking back is what my photo album is about. Thinking back is what dreaming (day or night) often does for us. Looking back helps me to understand where I’m standing right now.

As we encounter those stories, it’s not always about “good” stuff, or “pleasant” memories. Sometimes the looking back brings tears of sorrow as well as joy. Looking back certainly can call us to long for people, places and events – the good old days!! Looking back is a challenge to say “Thank you!” That thank you is for the building blocks of living stones which our memories are. We’ve recorded it all in our memory, and we are a sum total of all that goes before. Our past is not just past but present – in faith, in hope and serving.

What are your memories of the stories of God? Tell stories that made your scared as well as ones that console. How do you tell the stories of God in your life? Anything for which to be thankful

Mira hacia atrás y da gracias a Dios

Mirando hacia atrás es de lo que se trata el Estudio de Biblia. Mirando hacia atrás es de lo que se trata el leer las escrituras del domingo y las diarias. Mirando hacia atrás es de lo que se trata ver mi álbum de fotos. Pensando en el pasado es lo que el soñar (día o noche) hace para nosotros. Mirando hacia atrás es lo que me ayuda a comprender dónde me encuentro ahora.

Al encontrar esas historias, no es siempre cuestión de cosas “buenas” o recuerdos “agradables.” A veces al mirar hacia atrás nos trae lagrimas de tristeza así como de alegría. ¡¡Mirando hacía atrás ciertamente nos puede llevar a extrañar a personas, lugares y eventos – los buenos tiempos del pasado!! Mirando hacia atrás es una desafío a decir “¡Gracias!” Ese gracias es por los elementos esenciales de piedras vivas que son nuestros recuerdos. Lo hemos grabado todo en nuestras memorias, y somos un total de todo lo que nos precedió. Nuestro pasado no es sólo pasado sino presente – en fe, en esperanza y en servir.

¿Cuáles son tus recuerdos de las historias de Dios? Cuenta historias que te asustaron así como las que te consolaron. ¿Cómo cuentas las historias de Dios en tu vida? Cualquier cosa por lo cual das gracias.

Living into the Paschal Mystery, we believe with outrageous hope that the Spirit of God shines forth through the strength and the frailty of our very beings!  The Spirit of Truth is given to teach what we need to know; the Spirit of Light shatters the darkness that covers the earth; the Spirit of Love pervades the farthest reaches of the human heart; the Spirit of Life calls us to LISTEN, to LOVE, to LIVE, to LABOR: in short, to be prophets of hope for the reign of God.

In these next couple of weeks, we have a perfect opportunity to blend the power and passion of the death and resurrection of Jesus into the present moment where we live and move and have our being. The Paschal Mystery (i.e. the Suffering, Death and Resurrection of Christ) which empowers us with Jesus’ life is not about waiting for apparitions and miracles. Piety that does not challenge one to action is not of Christ, and certainly not of the Christ’s resurrection. A popular religiosity that binds and constricts the believer in guilt and fear of judgment misses the power which transforms us into the new person. We are connected in the freedom of the Children of God to the one who broke the tethers of death – not just physical, but spiritual and psychic as well.

If we have died with Christ, we are also to live with him: Live the Truth which is Life! Live in Christ who is the Way!

What influence does a committed Christian have in the political arena? We are called to break the shackles of prejudice and class-ism, looking beyond private and personal interests into the common good.

We are called to live the Life of Christ!

Vivir el Misterio Pascual

¡Para vivir por el Misterio Pascual, creemos con una esperanza enorme que el Espíritu de Dios alumbra por la fuerza y la debilidad de nuestro mero ser! El Espíritu de la Verdad se nos da para enseñarnos lo que nos falta a comprender; el Espíritu de Luz rompe la oscuridad que cubre la tierra; el Espíritu de Amor impregna lo profundo del corazón humano; el Espíritu de Vida nos llama a OIR, AMAR, LABORAR; para ser profetas de esperanza del reinado de Dios.

En las próximas semanas, tenemos la oportunidad perfecta a mezclar el poder de la pasión de la muerte y resurrección de Jesús con nuestra vida actual. El Misterio Pascual (i.e. el Sufrimiento, Muerte y Resurrección de Cristo) que nos anima con la vida de Jesús no es cosa de buscar milagros y apariciones. Una piedad que no es fuente del reto para ponernos activos, no es de Cristo, ni tampoco de la resurrección de Cristo. Una religiosidad popular que nos limita con cadenas de culpabilidad y miedo de juicio, se pierde el poder transformador que nos hace nuevas criaturas en Cristo. La libertad de ser Hijos de Dios nos une a EL que rompió la atadura de la muerte – no solamente la muerte física pero la espiritual y la psíquica igual.

Si hemos muerto con Cristo, vivimos con el también: ¡Vive la Verdad, que es la Vida! ¡Vive en Cristo quien es el Camino!

¿Qué papel lleve un cristiano comprometido en el campo político? Estamos llamados a romper lo que se ata de prejuicio y clasismo, con ojos más allá que los intereses privados y personales a favor del bien común.

¡Tenemos que vivir la vida de Cristo!

So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God’s household, Ephesians 2:19

It’s interesting that this quote from Ephesians, used just a few weeks ago in reference to immigrants among us, also calls us to see our relationship with one another as the nuclear church or domestic church. The family in Christ is more than a civil contract. To be a family calls us to see and perceive as well as be the presence of God, a community gathered at a table like the Trinity. Being family calls us beyond our wants and into recognizing and responding to the needs of others.

The family is called a domestic church because it is a small communion of persons that both draws its sustenance from the larger communion hat is the whole body of Christ, the church, and also reflects the life of the church so as to provide a kind of summary of it.

The Christian family Catechism of the Catholic Church
2204 “The Christian family constitutes a[n] … ecclesial communion…and should be called a domestic church.” It is a community of faith, hope, and charity; it assumes singular importance in the Church, as is evident in the New Testament.
2205 The Christian family is a communion of persons, a sign and image of the communion of the Father and the Son in the Holy Spirit. In the procreation and education of children it reflects the Father’s work of creation. It is called to partake of the prayer and sacrifice of Christ. Daily prayer and the reading of the Word of God strengthen it in charity. The Christian family has an evangelizing and missionary task.

2206 The relationships within the family bring an affinity of feelings, affections and interests, arising above all from the members’ respect for one another.

2207 The family is the original cell of social life. Authority, stability, and a life of relationships within the family constitute the foundations for freedom, security, and fraternity within society. The family is the community in which, from childhood, one can learn moral values, begin to honor God, and make good use of freedom. Family life is an initiation into life in society.

The Church also calls us to see in the “cell” of the family the “economy” (the management of the “house” [eco]) of relating as the Trinity. Father, Son and Spirit are one and the same with shared yet differing responsibilities. If it be the Prodigal Son/Father, the Woman at the Well, raising the son of the widow, eating at Zachaeus’ or Mathew’s tables, the Good Samaritan, the Ceder together with the disciples, the giving responsibility to John and Mary at the cross: Jesus is clear that our household is the care for one another.

La Iglesia Doméstica

Por lo tanto, ustedes ya no son extraños ni extranjeros, sino conciudadanos de los *santos y miembros de la familia de Dios. Efesios 2:19

Es interesante esta referencia de los Efesios, usada apenas hace unas semanas con respecto a los inmigrantes entre nosotros. Se nos hace un llamado para que consideremos nuestra relaciones como Iglesia Nuclear o Iglesia domestica. La Familia en Cristo es mas que un contrato civil. Por lo tanto para ser una verdadera familia debemos estar atentos y saber percibir la presencia de Dios a ejemplo de la Santísima Trinidad. Viviendo así como familia estaremos dispuestos para responder a las necesidades de los demás.

La Familia es llamada Iglesia domestica porque es una pequeña comunión de personas que manifestó la Comunión del cuerpo de Cristo que es la Iglesia y reflejan la unidad y la vida en el.

La Familia Cristiana El Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica
2204. ‘La familia cristiana constituye…la comunión eclesial; debe decirse iglesia doméstica’. Es una comunidad de fe, esperanza y caridad, posee en la Iglesia una importancia singular como aparece en el Nuevo Testamento.

 2205 La familia cristiana es una comunión de personas, reflejo e imagen de la comunión del Padre y del Hijo en el Espíritu Santo. Su actividad procreadora y educativa es reflejo de la obra creadora de Dios. Es llamada a participar en la oración y el sacrificio de Cristo. La oración cotidiana y la lectura de la Palabra de Dios fortalecen en ella la caridad. La familia cristiana es evangelizadora y misionera.

La Iglesia nos llama para descubrir en el centro de la familia la economía familiar que esta representada por el Padre de familia que debe reaccionarse a ejemplo de la Trinidad. Compartiendo responsabilidades, no despilfarrando lo que tienen: Ensénales sobre Zaqueo, Mateo, y el Buen Samaritano. También Jesús nos dice Padres tomen la responsabilidad de Juan y María al pie de la Cruz, que fue una total donación y entrega. Así pues esta mu claro; el cuidado del hogar debe estar custodiado de unos a otros

17. Since its founding, the United States has received immigrants from around the world who have found opportunity and safe haven in a new land. The labor, values and beliefs of immigrants from throughout the world have transformed the United States from a loose group of colonies into one of the leading democracies in the world today. From its founding to the present, the United States remains a nation of immigrants grounded in the firm belief that newcomers offer new energy, hope and cultural diversity.

18. At the present time, the interdependence and integration of our two peoples is clear. According to U.S. government statistics, about 800,000 Mexicans enter the United States each day. Cross-border U.S. and Mexican investment has reached unprecedented levels in recent years. Moreover, each year the United States admits between 150,000 to 200,000 Mexicans into the country as legal permanent residents, amounting to nearly 20 percent of the total number of legal permanent residents admitted each year. A significant number of U.S. citizens live, work and retire in Mexico. In addition to this present interdependence, Mexico and the United States have been bound historically by spiritual connections.

19. Our common faith in Jesus Christ moves us to search for ways that favor a spirit of solidarity. It is a faith that transcends borders and bids us to overcome all forms of discrimination and violence so that we may build relationships that are just and loving.

20. Under the light of the apparition of Our Lady of Guadalupe to the littlest of her children, who were as powerless as most migrants are today, our continent’s past and present receive new meaning. It was St. Juan Diego whom our mother asked to build a temple so in it she could show her love, compassion, aid and defense to all her children, especially the least among them.(5) Since then, in her basilica and beyond its walls she has brought all the peoples of America to celebrate at the table of the Lord, where all his children may partake of and enjoy the unity of the continent in the diversity of its peoples, languages and cultures (EA, 11).

Es para más que una disciplina académica que publicamos el documento episcopal Carta Pastoral sobre la Migración. Es algo integral a ser Católica ser activo en el proceso político con consciencias formados por la Enseñanza Social de la Iglesia.

Por eso, ya no sois extranjeros ni forasteros, sino conciudadanos de los santos y miembros de la familia de Dios,… Efesios 2,19

17. Desde su fundación hasta el día de hoy, los Estados Unidos han recibido a inmigrantes provenientes de todo el mundo, que han encontrado oportunidad y refugio en tierras nuevas. El trabajo, los valores y las creencias de los inmigrantes procedentes de todas las partes del mundo, han transformado a los Estados Unidos, que han pasado de ser un grupo frágil de colonias a una de las democracias destacadas del mundo de hoy. Desde su fundación hasta la actualidad, los Estados Unidos de América continúan siendo una nación de inmigrantes, firme en la creencia de que los recién llegados ofrecen energía, esperanza y diversidad cultural.

18. En la época contemporánea, queda clara la interdependencia e integración que han alcanzado nuestros dos pueblos. Según estadísticas del Gobierno estadounidense, alrededor de 800,000 mexicanos ingresan diariamente a los Estados Unidos.3 En años recientes las inversiones bilaterales han alcanzado niveles sin precedente. Más aún, cada año los Estados Unidos admiten entre 150,000 y 200,000 mexicanos al país como residentes permanentes legales, representando así casi el 20 por ciento del total de los residentes permanentes legales admitidos anualmente.4 Además, un número significativo de estadounidenses vive, trabaja y se jubila en México. Sumada a esta interdependencia vigente, México y los Estados Unidos han quedado vinculados por lazos históricos y espirituales.

19. Nuestra fe común en Jesucristo, nos mueve a buscar maneras de favorecer el espíritu de solidaridad. Es una fe que trasciende las fronteras y nos pide eliminar toda forma de discriminación y de violencia, para construir relaciones de justicia y de amor.

20. A la luz de la aparición de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe al más pequeño de sus hijos, quien era tan débil como la mayoría de los migrantes lo son hoy, el pasado y el presente de nuestro continente reciben un nuevo significado. Fue a San Juan Diego a quien nuestra Madre pidió le construyera un templo, en el que pudiese mostrar su amor, compasión, auxilio y defensa a todos sus hijos, especialmente a los más pequeños.5 Desde entonces, en su Basílica y más allá de sus muros, ella reúne a todos los pueblos de América a celebrar en la mesa del Señor, en donde todos sus hijos podemos compartir y disfrutar de la unidad del continente en la diversidad de sus pueblos, lenguas y culturas (EA,11).

Hear Our Prayer for Haiti, Lord!

- We pray for hope despite this situation, that even as Haitians face darkness, they may see light in hope.

- We pray for the reunification of families.
