Blessing of the Throat

The candles blessed during Candlemas were used for a special blessing of throats during Mass on Sunday, Feb. 3, the memorial of St. Blaise. St. Blaise saved the life of a boy who was choking on a fish bone. He is now the patron saint of all who have diseases and injuries of the throat.

The candles are crossed against the throat, and the following prayer is said:

Through the intercession of Saint Blaise, bishop and martyr, may God deliver you from ailments of the throat and from every other evil. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
