In a beautiful expression of faith, fraternity, and Franciscan tradition, parishioners from three parishes served by Franciscan priests came together to commemorate the Transitus of St. Francis of Assisi, marking the 800th anniversary of his death.

The evening began at Our Lady of the Valley Parish, where the faithful gathered to begin a solemn procession. Joined by parishioners from Socorro Mission, the community prayerfully processed along Alameda Avenue toward Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish. The procession offered a visible witness of faith and reflected the spirit of fraternity that St. Francis embraced throughout his life.

Upon arriving at Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the faithful continued the observance of the Transitus by completing the traditional seven-decade Franciscan Crown, also known as the Rosary of the Seven Joys of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This treasured Franciscan devotion recalls seven joyful moments in the life of the Blessed Mother and has long held a special place within Franciscan spirituality.

The Transitus, meaning “passage” or “crossing,” commemorates St. Francis’ passage from earthly life into eternal life. Each year, Franciscans and the faithful traditionally gather on the evening of October 3 to prayerfully remember his final hours, his love for Christ, and the remarkable witness of a life devoted to poverty, humility, peace, and care for all of God’s creation.

This year’s observance carried particular significance as the Franciscan family commemorates 800 years since the death of St. Francis. The gathering of three parish communities served as a fitting tribute to the saint who called his followers to live as brothers and sisters, united in Christ.

As parishioners walked together, prayed together, and remembered the final journey of St. Francis, the celebration became more than a remembrance of an event eight centuries ago. It was an invitation to continue his mission today—to be instruments of peace, to serve others with humility, and to encounter Christ in one another.

May the example of St. Francis of Assisi continue to inspire our parish communities to walk together in faith and to proclaim through our lives his enduring message of peace and all good — Pax et Bonum.
